For this sweet and sour meatball recipe we are taking a shortcut by using frozen meatballs. There are now a few different frozen plant-based meatballs available.
For this recipe, I used Gardein frozen meatballs.

The sweet and sour sauce is a delicious homemade sauce made with a few simple ingredients.
For the sweet and sour sauce you will need:
- brown sugar
- vinegar
- ketchup
- soy sauce
- pineapple juice
- cornstarch
how to make sweet and sour meatballs
Start by making the sauce. Add the brown sugar, vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce and 2 cups of the pineapple juice to a large skillet. Bring the sauce mixture to a boil.
While the sauce is cooking, mix cornstarch with ¼ cup of the remaining pineapple juice, whisking to get out all the lumps.
Add the cornstarch mixture to the boiling sauce.
Add the frozen meatballs and peppers. Bring to a simmer. Cover and cook 10-12 minutes, until sauce has thickened and the meatballs are heated through.
Stir in pineapple chunks and cook until the pineapple is heated through.
Serve the vegan sweet and sour meatballs over rice.
how to store the meatballs
To store the meatballs, allow the meatballs to cool and store in an airtight container. They’ll keep in the fridge for 3-4 days.
Reheat the meatballs in the microwave or on low heat on the stovetop.

Vegan Sweet and Sour Meatballs

Ingredients
- ½ cup light brown sugar
- ½ cup rice vinegar
- ¼ cup ketchup
- 1 tablespoon tamari or light soy sauce
- 2 ¼ cups Pineapple Juice
- 1 tablespoon cornstarch
- 24 ounces Frozen Vegan Meatballs*
- 2 bell peppers any colors, chopped into chunks
- 1 can pineapple chunks, drained
- 2 green onions sliced
- Cooked rice for serving
Instructions
- If serving with rice, start by cooking the rice according the package directions.
- To a large skillet, add the brown sugar, vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce and 2 cups of the pineapple juice to the pan. Bring the sauce mixture to a boil.
- While the sauce is cooking, mix cornstarch with ¼ cup of the remaining pineapple juice, whisking to get out all the lumps.
- Add the cornstarch mixture to the boiling sauce.
- Add the frozen meatballs and peppers. Bring to a simmer. Cover and cook 10-12 minutes, until sauce has thickened and the meatballs are heated through.
- Stir in pineapple chunks and cook until the pineapple is heated through, about 3-4 minutes.
- Serve the meatballs over cooked rice and garnish with sliced green onions.
