Growing up I didn’t like chocolate. I tried a few different chocolate candies when I was younger, but I didn’t like them. On Halloween, I would dump out all my candy and pick out all the chocolate ones. I would be left with just a few starbursts and skittles. As I have gotten older, I have discovered that I do like chocolate. I just don’t like milk chocolate. Now I love having a piece of good quality dark chocolate once in a awhile. The darker the chocolate the better.
This Cacao Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie is thick, creamy and chocolatey. For the chocolate part of the smoothie I like to use nutrient dense cacao powder and cacao nibs. Cacao is rich in antioxidants, iron and magnesium. If you haven’t had cacao nibs before they are cacao beans that haven been chopped into very small pieces. Cacao nibs contain high amounts of theobromine which has similar effects to caffeine. Cacao nibs are also full of antioxidants, dietary fiber, magnesium and potassium.
Lately, I have been adding maca into my smoothies. Maca root helps balance hormones and mood. Maca is believed to have positive effects of energy and stamina. It also has a nutty, malted flavor which pairs well with the peanut butter and chocolate.
This Cacao Banana Peanut Butter Smoothie is like having dessert for breakfast!
- 1 Large Frozen Banana
- 3/4-1 Cup Almond Milk
- 2 Tablespoons Peanut Butter
- 1 Tablespoon Cacao Powder
- 1 Tablespoon Cacao Nibs
- 1 Tsp Maca
- Add the the ingredients to a high speed blender. Blend until smooth.
