As much as I love to travel, I haven’t been able to travel much with our pug Phoebe. She usually travels with me when I go and visit my parents, but that’s really it. Her last major trip was when she came with us to Mexico City. She loved the plane. She is such a great traveler and enjoys going to new places.
When we started to plan a weekend getaway, we wanted to find a pet-friendly location. We knew that we wanted to go somewhere relaxing, near the water and located in Michigan. When I googled dog-friendly hotels in Michigan, the Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island came up. We both love Mackinac Island and knew that it would be the perfect spot to take Phoebe. Plus she would experience her first boat ride on the ferry to the island.
Mission Point is located just a short walk from downtown. The resort offers the most incredible lawn and lakeshore frontage. Mission Point Resort offers a Pooch at the Point package. The offer includes two nights, breakfast and a special welcome amenity for your dog.
GETTING TO THE ISLAND
In order to get to Mackinac Island, you have to take a ferry across the lake. You can take the ferry out of Mackinac City or cross the bridge to take the ferry from St. Ignace. For this trip we took Shepler’s Ferry out of Mackinac City. When we arrived to the ferry dock, our luggage was tag to go straight to Mission Point. I loved this because we didn’t have to worry about collecting our bags and having them sent to the hotel or carrying them ourselves.
Phoebe loved the boat ride over. She really enjoyed the cool breeze and looking over the water.
CHECKING-IN
Mission Point is located a short walk away from the downtown area. If you aren’t in the mood to walk, you can also take a horse taxi to the resort. When we entered the lobby we were warmly greeted by the front desk. The check-in process went smoothly and quickly. Our room was ready when we checked-in. Our room was located in the Straits Lodge, which is just a short walk over from the main lobby.
THE ROOM
We stayed in the Straights King Room, located on the third floor. The room overlooked the Straits of Mackinac. The room was spacious and well laid out.

HOTEL DINING
Mission Point offers an amazing dining selection. The Executive Chef, Gabriel Vera, has done amazing job crafting menus that create a memorable dining experience.
Two of restaurants are dog-friendly. Bistro on the Green and the patio at the Round Island Bar & Grill allow your dog to join you while you dine. We dined at both restaurants and everything we had was incredible. If you have any special diet requests, they are very willing to accommodate you and your dietary needs.
If you are like me enjoy a good craft beer, be sure to check out the three Michigan craft beers on tap. You can only get these beers at Mission Point. My favorite of was the New Day IPA from Saugatuck Brewery.
Our favorite dining experience at the resort was at Chianti, an upscale Italian restaurant that offers house made sauces and pastas. Before heading to dinner, stop at the Library for a handcrafted cocktail. All of the cocktails are made with the freshest ingredients and herbs from their garden. I ordered the Watermelon-Elderflower cocktail and it was so light and refreshing.
For dinner, the chef prepared a cauliflower steak that had been marinating. The cauliflower steak was served with vegetables and caponata on the side. The cauliflower steak was perfectly cooked and a very satisfying meal.
The sauces at Chianti became so popular with their dining guests that they decided to sell their own marinara sauces. You can purchase their sauces at the Boxwood Coffeeshop and Cafe.
For a glass of wine, be sure to stop by Reserve, A Tasting Room. Reserve offers a wide selection of wines, included their own. I had a glass of their Sauvignon Blanc and Hector went with a glass of their Cabernet Sauvignon which he thoroughly enjoyed. We bought a bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon to enjoy on a special occasion in the future.
RECREATION
Mission Point Resort offers a wide variety of activities for the whole family. If you are an early riser, take a guided hike to watch the sunrise over the bluffs. Enjoy the 18-hole putting course right on the property or rent a bike to ride around the island. My personal favorite activity at the resort would have to be the full service Lakeside Spa & Salon. I highly recommend checking out the spa while your are there. It is the perfect way to relax on the island. The new design of the spa is calming and very relaxing. I wish that we had an extra day just to partake in all the resort activities! There truly is something for everyone at the resort.
Exploring the Resort
One of our favorite things about staying at Mission Point Resort is the beautiful grounds. A short walk down from our room was the Great Lawn, the perfect location to sit and relax. You can pick up a bottle of wine at Reserve to enjoy outside. We enjoyed taking Phoebe on a walk along the water. She has become a big fan of going to the lake!
Recent Updates & Future Plans
Since going under new ownership two years ago, the resort has been making some updates and improvements to the resort. The new updates don't overpower the historic charm of the resort that guests have come to love over the years. The resort plans to continue updating the guest rooms while still maintaining the resorts original character.
I was a little worried about where Phoebe would be allowed to go. I was extremely happy with how dog-friendly and accommodating Mission Point was while we were there. Mission Point Resort offers something for everyone. Whether you are traveling with kids, your dog or just with your significant other, Mission Point Resort is a great place to stay while visiting Mackinac Island.

Disclaimer: I was hosted by Mission Point Resort but as always these are my own thoughts and opinions.
