This Strawberry Lemon Basil Smoothie is a light, refreshing smoothie that is a perfect way to start the day!

Eating locally and seasonally is very important to me. Over the past few years, I have increased the amount of local produce groceries that I buy. I am lucky to have a farmers market here in Grand Rapids that is open year round. I try and purchase 80% of my groceries from local farms and producers. The 20% is for things that just don't grow here in Michigan. This mostly includes citrus fruits and avocados.

I recently discovered BrightFarms, a company that specializes in local, low-impact farming. Produce is grown in greenhouses that are outside major cities and near supermarkets. The greenhouse uses 80% less water, 90% less land and 95% less shipping fuel than conventional produce that travels thousands of miles to reach its final destination. All of the produce is grown without pesticides and no GMOs.

BrightFarms kindly sent me a package of some of the product that they grow at their greenhouse. My absolute favorite was the lemon basil, which I had never had before. Lemon basil is aromatic with a light lemon scent. I love adding herbs to my smoothies and basil is a wonderful addition to your smoothies.

This Strawberry Lemon Basil Smoothie smells just like summer. The floral, sweet strawberries paired with the fragrant  lemon basil is just divine.

I love using avocado is my smoothies instead of bananas. The avocado creates a rich, creamy smoothie. The avocado also pairs beautifully with the strawberries and lemon basil.

Ingredients

• 1 ½ Cups Frozen Strawberries
• ½ Avocado
• 10-15 Lemon Basil Leaves
• 1 Tablespoon Chia Seeds
• 1 Cup Plant Milk

Instructions

1. Add all the ingredients to a blender. Blend until smoothie.
2. Serve!
