Over the past year, I have made an effort to explore more of the Midwest. Growing up in Michigan, the Midwest has a special place in my heart. Last year I visited Wisconsin for the very first time. I'm not sure what took me so long to visit, considering Wisconsin and Michigan share a great lake. After my first visit, I wanted to explore more of Wisconsin —Madison was first up on my list to visit.
Madison has been on my radar for awhile now. Madison is not only the capitol of Wisconsin, it is also home to the University of Wisconsin. This college town offers a wide range of activities to do and places to explore.
I love being able to bring my pug Phoebe when I travel. When I was researching hotels in Madison, I came across HotelRed—Madison's first boutique hotel. While browsing the hotel's website, I noticed that they were a pet-friendly hotel. For an additional pet fee, you can bring your dog along with you. Once I saw that, I decided to book my hotel stay and bring Phoebe along with me.
After a long day of travel, Phoebe and I received a very warm welcome as we checked into the hotel. My favorite added touch was the dog treats that were set out for all the dogs staying at the hotel. I love that they write down all the dogs that are currently staying at the hotel. Phoebe loved the dog treats and helped herself to a few treats.
the hotel room
HotelRED has 48 suites that offer all the comforts of home. You'll find modern furnishings, original art, high-speed Wireless, HD LCD TVs, a full kitchenette and a host of room-specific amenities such as soaking tubs and private patios in the suites.
I stayed in one of the premier studio suites which featured:
- Well-appointed kitchenette
- Bathrooms with European Spa Shower, vessel sink and Aveda spa products
- 42″ HD LCD TVs
- Spacious desk with ergonomic chair
- King size pillow-top bed with luxurious linens
- Complimentary high speed WiFi
One of my favorite parts of the room was the furnished outdoor terrace overlooking the neighborhood. Such a spacious outdoor space to enjoy. The hotel reminded me of a big city studio apartment. I love all the modern touches and minimalist design.
Phoebe made herself right at home. She loved the bed and I think she was ready to move in.
I love how excited Phoebe gets when traveling! She is always ready for a new adventure.
During our short stay I wasn't able to use all the amenities that HotelRED offers. I will definitely take advantage during our next stay.
HotelRED Amenities:
- On-site complimentary parking on a first come basis (mostly covered)
- Complimentary shuttle service to local attractions, the Kohl Center and the airport (based on availability)
- Complimentary grocery pick up from Metcalfe’s
- Complimentary access to our fitness center
- Complimentary class at Canvas Club Boxing
- Complimentary membership to B-Cycle (seasonal)
- Complimentary passes to Goodman Pool (seasonal)
- Complimentary kayak, paddle boat and paddle board rentals from Wingra Boats (seasonal)

During my visit, I was able to dine at The Wise Restaurant, located on the first floor of the hotel.
I started my dinner off with a local Wisconsin craft beer. Perfect after a long day of exploring Madison in the heat. They also have a great cocktail menu. For my entree, I ordered the Charred Cauliflower entree. This was such a satisfying vegetable heavy dinner. I love the combination of golden raisins, almonds, Aleppo pepper and lemon zest with the charred cauliflower.
