Mackinac Island is one of my favorite places to visit. I have talked about it a few different times on the blog. It is just a magical place that I think everyone should visit at least once! Over the years I have stayed at a number of Mackinac Island's hotels, but I was never able to stay at the historic Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island until this past October. The Grand Hotel is recognized as Travel + Leisure’s 500 World’s Best Hotels and the Best Hotel in Michigan, and Condé Nast Traveler named Grand Hotel as a 2017 Top Resort in the Midwest!
We were able to get a great deal for our room. We were able to stay at the Grand Hotel for $130 per person per night, including breakfast and 5 course dinner. This amazing deal was with the end of summer package. It took some tenacity to book this reservation because you had to call, booking online wasn't an option. It took over 2 hours of being on hold to book our reservation. Staying at the Grand Hotel at this rate was definitely worth the time it took to book the reservation!
The Grand Hotel is rich with history. Family-owned for three generations, the Grand Hotel embraces tradition, while keeping up with modern amenities.
The rooms
Grand Hotel offers exceptional accommodations, with each guest room uniquely decorated. No two rooms are the same. Each room varies in color scheme, wall paper, bedding and decor. All of the rooms We stayed in room 280, with a view of the lake.
We had requested a lake view when we booked the room. We were very happy to see we got our request for a lake view.
world’s longest porch
Did you know that the world’s longest porch was located on Mackinac Island? It is just one of the great features about the Grand Hotel. Stroll along all 660 feet of the porch.
Grab a seat on one of the white rocking chairs on the porch, order a drink, and enjoy the view of the Straits of Mackinac. This is the perfect way to relax and and unwind.
dining at the grand
After 6:30 pm, there is s strict dress code at the Grand. Dresses, skirts, blouses, dress sweaters and dress slacks for ladies are preferred, while gentlemen are required to wear a suit coat, necktie and dress pants, no denim or shorts. It was nice to have a chance to dress up for a night!
Included with your stay at The Grand Hotel is breakfast and a 5 course dinner. As a vegan, it can be hard to find dinning options when traveling. I was happy to read on the Grand Hotel's website that they can accommodate different types of diets and food allergies. After checking into the hotel, I headed upstairs to check in at the information desk. I met with one of the managers, who went over the dining options. I am pretty easy going when it comes to requesting a vegan meal; I didn't want to request something to complicated. I am always happy to have the chef prepare a delicious vegan meal.
Dinner is served in the main dining room, located on the parlor level of the hotel. We were seated all the way in the back of the dinning room, which we just loved. Along with our 5 course diner, my Mom and I shared a bottle of semi-dry riesling. The highlight of the meal was the tofu stir-fry. It was packed full of flavor, and a very satisfying main course.
For breakfast, there are two options. You can order off the breakfast menu or opt for the buffet. I was craving fruit, so I went with the buffet option.
Cupola Bar
After dinner, we headed up to the Cupola Bar for a nightcap. The Cupola Bar is located at the very top of Grand Hotel, with a panoramic view of the Straits of Mackinac and the Mackinac Bridge. Unfortunately it was too dark to see much of the Straits of Mackinac when we arrived. As we waited for our drinks, we listened to the music from the piano player. Next time I stay at the Grand, I will visit the Cupola Bar a little earlier in the day.
the atmosphere
A stay at the historic Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island is like stepping back in time, expect with modern day convinces. The best of both worlds. I loved walking around the hotel, taking in all of the colors, art, and furniture.
