Finding Vegan options in Mexico City can sometimes be a little difficult; however, a quick search on Happy Cow shows that there are actually many Vegan options in the city. Sometimes you do have to go out of your way to locate Vegan-Friendly restaurants. One Vegetarian restaurant that isn’t located in the main touristy area of Mexico City is Gold Taco. From our apartment Gold Taco is probably a 20 minute metro ride, which includes a transfer.
Gold Taco features a large vegetarian menu that is really Vegan-Friendly. Just make sure to let your server know that you are Vegana and no queso, huevos or leche. The prices are also fairly cheap. The menu features vegetarian options of traditional Mexican dishes.
I decided to order some Vegan tacos. How can you go wrong with tacos? I usually order 3 tacos for an entree sized meal. 2 tacos just isn’t quite enough and 4 is too much for me. At Gold Taco they have gluten based meats or soy based meats, which is a great gluten-free option. I got a chorizo taco, carnitas taco, and cochinita pibil taco. My favorite was definitely the cochinita pibil.
Hector went with the Bistec with Onions with a side of beans and fries. The Vegan gluten based steak was covered in tons of onions, but the bistec had great authentic flavor.
We found the service to be a little slow. Also, my tacos where brought out before Hector’s entree. I was finished eating before Hector even got his meal. I prefer to eat together, so I didn’t like the fact that our meals where brought out at different times. I think this might be common in Mexico. You might order more tacos while the other person eats.
Attached to Gold Taco is a health food store which has a great selection of Vegan products. Some of the Vegan products available for sale are Tofurky Sausages, Daiya Cheese, Tofu, Vegan Cream Cheese, Nutritional Yeast, and Vital Wheat Gluten. These products can be hard to find in Mexico City; luckily the health store carries some of our Vegan favorites!
Overall, Gold Taco is a great Vegetarian + Vegan-Friendly restaurant that offers traditional Mexican dishes. I recommended trying the tacos.
